The V-Day Overview

It was quite an eventful day yesterday so I'll present you with some pictures to commemorate the day:

It began with heart shaped hole-in-the-breads. It was a spur of the moment decision but it turned out pretty cute.
It continued when I was babysitting and we made valentines for our loved ones. The kids all have a very artistic eye.

Iris at work.

Claire being her adorable self. She is moving to Germany shortly, and I will miss her dearly.

Wades favorite part of baking. Licking the paddle.
We made chocolate cookies with butterscotch chips and toasted almonds for their mom. She was thrilled with her valentines.

Now onto Dinner:

The table was set like so for a different than normal feel.

The first course for dinner was a Pea and Mint soup and Tomato Basil Bruschetta. I will admit the bruschetta is not homemade. I just had it on hand and thought it would go well.
We moved to the second course which was bacon wrapped salmon with a maple glaze, white cheddar wild rice, and steamed green beans. We were so full we could barely eat half of the entree. We're not used to this three course business. The recipe will be on Emily's Experiments soon.

Later on, we finally had room for dessert. This is called a Concord. In school my teacher made it and I have wanted to make it ever since. It is layers of chocolate mousse and chocolate meringue disks, with chopped meringue straws on the sides, garnished with ganache dipped strawberries, and chantilly cream. So rich. The crunchy on the outside, and chewy on the inside of the meringue, mixed with the silkiness of the chocolate mousse makes it a new favorite in our family.
The valentine I gave to my special valentine.

Cheers to full hearts and full stomaches.

Free short stack

IHOP had a free pancake promotion today (of course they ask for a donation for a foundation for a local charity, which we donated to). I went with a few girlfriends and it was a usual IHOP experience complete with an incoherent waitress, a dirty plate, cold syrup, no silverware on the table, lukewarm pancakes, a misplaced check, and no requested lemon in the water. We still had a pleasant time eating our free pancakes, and talking in our corner booth for a long time while there was freezing rain outside. We all seemed to have gripes about the day so we were the right people to be with, and drown our sorrows in pancakes with lots of butter and syrup. The promotion is still going until 10 pm so check it out, especially if you have a better IHOP than we do.

Prescription: Slippers and Rice

Since Thursday night I've had sharp pains running from my abdomen to my shoulder blades 24/7. In the first hour of it I was doubled over in so much pain I was writhing, overcome with nausea, and could've open my eyes or hardly talk to tell poor KC what was hurting or how he could help. The sweet boy was bringing me anything he thought would help. I took a Lortab I happened to have on hand. Even that took an hour to take the edge off the pain and I also took an anti-nausea pill. He talked to his mom who happened to be with a doctor and he gave us a number of diagnoses. He was nice to help us out, but I was trying to believe it would just go away. I wanted some fresh air and it took everything in me to walk outside because of the pain. The cold sidewalk seemed so appealing on my stomach so I used it as an ice pack for a few minutes by laying down with my skin to the sidewalk and it actually helped. By then the two medications were kicking in with mostly the drowsiness. I got into bed with out changing to pajamas, or the other regular bedtime activities since it hurt to even move the slightest bit, with an ice pack on my stomach. I didn't even get in the covers. KC just covered me with a few blankets and I was out until 7 am. When I woke up there was still lingering sharp pains, though not nearly to the degree of the night before, that mostly flared up when I ate anything, or when I push on my stomach at all. I tried stretching the pain out with some Yoga (A group of my friends get together Sat. morning to work out at the church. We love it.) and although it didn't get worse, it didn't get better either. KC and I made our way to the urgent care to play it safe, and after a about 2 1/2 hours, I was given a prescription of Prilosec and told to go on a diet of toast, plain rice, apple juice/sauce, bananas, jello, and things like that, and to make an appointment with my regular doctor on Monday. She said that due to the varying areas of the pain she blamed it on the spicy foods we'd been eating for a few days. And I used dried black beans for the first time. Apparently my body doesn't like them very much. She wanted to know every ingredient I put in our dinner the night it started. It was like I was giving her a recipe.

I called my mom after seeing the doctor and she gave me a prescription I liked even more than the doctors. She said cancel everything for the next couple days, put on my best pajamas and slippers and just veg, forgetting about all stresses for just a little while. A lot of times this kind of pain is stress induced. And you know what? She was right. With the combination of easily digestible foods and my comfy new slippers, I was feeling much better. Today, on Monday, all that's left is a little heartburn type feeling, that Tums is really helping with. Am I glad that's over and I didn't have to see another doctor. I was getting very worried it would be something serious. I am so grateful for my health and to all those who helped solve this non-mysterious mystery. But I'm afraid to go off this diet even though I am craving flavor very much. Soon I'll be normal again and I'm going to have a nice big, and healthy, meal.

We just finished...

...this,and boy was is good. We were intrigued at the grocery store the other day when were were searching for this but couldn't find it so we were up for the adventurous little splurge. Try it out sometime. But beware as it contains 15 grams of fat in 1/2 cup. And there are 4 of those in this delicious treat. Luckily there were two of us eating it, on two different occasions, so it's justified a little. Hopefully someday we'll find the other one we want. But until then, we'll try to find other gold mines in the frozen food aisle.

Today's Aldi find

1 gallon skim milk: $.99

I was told

Last night during a little silly quarrel between KC and me, I went into my room to vent into the huge pile of clothes that had to be folded (cleaning is my best outlet, next to baking). I never turn on the radio in my room because it's one of those tuning ones that never comes to a clear station, and when it finally does, it get scratchy again the moment I move away. I needed some music so I took my chances. So the station I came to first came through loud and clear. And do you know what it was saying? It was one of those commercials on how to improve and keep harmony in your marriage, and how to talk things out yadda, yadda, yadda. I tried to stick it out and learn from this inspired coincidence, but I just promptly turn it off feeling a little betrayed by my radio for not helping me out. However, it did eventually put a little smile on my face where there wasn't one before when I considered the humor in the situation. I guess it might've helped a little after all.

My time of day

So, Cami had this quiz on her blog. Check it:

You're the time of day right around sunrise, when the sky is still a pale bluish gray. The streets are empty, and the grass and leaves are a little bit sparkly with dew. You are the sound of a few chirpy birds outside the window. You are quiet, peaceful, and contemplative. If you move slowly, it's not because you're lazy – it's because you know there's no reason to rush. You move like a relaxed cat, pausing for deep stretches that make your muscles feel alive. You are long sips of tea or coffee (out of a mug that's held with both hands) that slowly warm your insides just as the sun is brightening the sky.

I am amazed at this. I wasn't sure with the questions I was answering that it would be correct. But usually when I have a choice of when to wake up, it is exactly in the 6:40s everyday (if I go to bed before 12:30 am. Even then I have a hard time sleeping past 7:30.) There was a time that I think it was exactly 6:49 for several days in a row. Weird, huh? I do love the morning and a nice relaxing day. I love grocery shopping early when everyone is cheerful and everything is quiet. If you haven't tired it, you should. You'll be hooked.

My musical past

I consider myself a musical person. I love to sing, I like tinkering on the piano (my mom taught all of us kids the piano for years), and I have played a couple woodwinds in the past. I played the flute for about three years in jr. high, and when I didn't make it to the symphonic band and didn't want to stay in the concert band for another year, (I like to blame it on my nerves during tests. I always did terribly in high pressure tests. Don't even ask me my 1st and 2nd ACT scores.) my teacher said that if I learned the bass clarinet over the summer, he could use me in the higher band. I liked the idea of learning another instrument so I took him up on it. It was almost as tall as me, and I had to deal with those gross reeds, but I really gained an appreciation for the bass line of music-which is totally different from playing the flute. All through that year, I continued with the flute in private lessons. Melody also played. We even had matching flute cases. We LOVED playing duets. I know there are numerous pictures of us with our instruments, but of course they are in Utah. I need to get my hands on those. Anyway, when we got into high school we became interested in other extracurricular activities and quit our private lessons and the school band, all the while playing for various church things to keep up with it. I am sad to say that my flute hasn't hardly been looked at for about 5 years. I do remember playing in sacrament meeting a little before I moved to Maryland, so it doesn't seem that long ago if you think about it that way. I've often thought about that talent I had and today for some reason (probably the fact that since my babysitting was canceled due to sick kids, I watched Netflix online movies all day and was getting a little bored) I decided to take the brave step to take my beautiful instrument out of it's case. I think I've been postponing this reunion since I wasn't sure how much I would remember. I would be so ashamed if all those years of learning was for nothing. I put it together like I did so many times before, I blew in it a little to warm it up and tried a scale. To my surprise, it didn't sound too bad. It really took me back. My mouth muscles were very tired, and the high notes are very sharp. (Those used to be my strong point back in the day. That's what I get for not continuing to learn. I'm an amature again.) I recored a primary song on the keyboard we have and played the melody with the flute while I let the song relay. This is what I used to do to practice at for lessons and I really enjoyed myself. I think the next time I'm in Utah, I'm going to dig up my old beginner books and brush up. A skill like this should never go to waste. As for the bass clarinet, I enjoyed the year I had with it. I think I was even first chair at some point. There were five of us, so that isn't saying much. I gave it back to the school when the year was over, as it was school property, but I 'll never forget carrying that thing to and from school everyday. It was quite a work out.

Seemed fun

I found this on a couple people's blogs, and although I was not tagged, I felt like being nostalgic. It's time I got this on record anyway. I actually had to reach into my journal for a lot of this. I'll quote some of it for proof.

1. Where did you meet your husband?
In the University Park Singles Ward in College Park, M
D. I had just been terribly dumped by my boyfriend and KC and his roommate Joe walked into sacrament meeting. (It was actually the week before this, but it took me a week to record it in my journal) September 2 2004, "I met a couple of guys at Church...they were very nice...and they got my number and everything." I remember watching KC as he walked from the door all the way to his seat. I was a little annoyed when I saw another girl talking to him and I didn't know why. I was also bugged when Joe seemed a little more interested. He was more behind getting my number than KC was. This is KC, Joe, and me only a few months into our friendship. KC was getting a little cuddly, don't you think?
2. What was the first thing you said to your husband?
"So you went to BYU," or something like that. He was holding the door open, so I had to say something. We some how got around to our ages, and when he said he was 27 and I was 19, I thought that was it. No more getting to know KC. He was just too old. But mostly, I thought he thought I was too young, which he did at the time.

3. Where was your first date?
We hung out a lot, but not usually on official dates. Our first alone together was my work party at the Park Hyatt Washington DC. It was supposed to be the previous boyfriend to come with me, but when he didn't call to confirm (surprise, surprise) I asked KC. It was actually two parties in a row. First, my bosses Christmas party at his house, and then, we went to the Hotel. My co-workers kept giving me the eye, meaning they liked KC. I was still stuck on the loser boyfriend at the beginning of the night, but when I was dropping KC off after a fun evening together, I was sad to see him go. December 19, 2004, " He was the perfect gentlemen- very talkative and so sweet. I just loved all the time we had together." He really showed me how a girl should be treated. He didn't even let me walk on the street side of the sidewalk. I was quite smitten, although it took many months to start really dating. This is at that very party.
4. Where was your first kiss?
In his car in Cami's parking lot ( I lived there at the time). In my journal I wrote, "He actually kissed me... I can't stop thinking about [it]...the next day he told me it was hard to focus at work." It was funny because I had harshly rejected him a week earlier. I told my mom and sisters I would never, never, NEVER like him. I really thought I was telling the truth. A few days later after a date with him that I was not looking forward to at all, it just hit me that I would not want to be without him. When I decided that I was ready for a relationship with him, he gave this whole spiel on how we should be smart and take things slow. Them he promptly leaned in and kissed me (disregarding his own advice). He also texted me about 5 times after he left the night we kissed." Wow", "Really, Wow", "Really Emily, you are freakin' rad". There were a couple more, but I don't want to embarrass him too badly.

5. Did you have a long or short engagement/courtship?
I would've had it happen faster, but KC is a think-through-er. He likes to take his time. We were friends for about 7 months, dated for about 9 months, and were engaged for 2 months. In Mormon standards, this is a long time, but to my friends here in the east, we were crazy for moving so quickly.

6. Where did you get engaged?
In the foothills behind his house in Provo on Christmas morning 2005. He had the ring for about a month before he gave it to me and promised that we would be engaged before we went to Utah. I was pretty mad during that month, especially when we got off the plane and there was still no ring on my finger. but I really learned to trust that he knew what he was doing. I guess he had many years to decide how he was going to propose so he wanted there to be a little bit of surprise left. He played the guitar and sang "The Luckiest." (Skip about 2 1/2 minutes ahead on the link to hear the song.) Journal entry-" I can't believe I get to be with him forever... I couldn't choose better...I love him with everything in me." A little corny, but very true. I am the luckiest, for sure.

7. Where did you get married?
Mount Timpanogos Temple, March 4 2006. That's night, we are coming up on two years, and I can hardly believe it.

Man, that took me back! I found myself reading old emails, and so caught up in my journal entries from when we met. He has really brought me to a happy place in my life and I am so glad to be here with him now. He's a wonderful man.

I guess I should've left this for our anniversary, but whatev. I can love him year-round, right?

I tag Melody, Mom, Amber, and Cami (Lili, I have a feeling you'll have a lot to say on this topic soon, so don't feel left out.) Or anyone else that wants to. That's what I did.

Whoa!

I was just watching Sesame Street with the kids I babysit and I noticed something. I haven't really seen this show for many years, just snippets here and there and I noticed two of the muppet characters (I can't remember which ones) were playing some game with Gabi-Maria and Luis's daughter. One episode that really sticks out when I was younger was the one where she was "born". And now she is an adult and part of the cast. That is crazy to me. I know it's not the same girl they used as a baby, but it just means that much time has actually passed. I'm feeling so grown up all of the sudden.

It's a very creative show. They just used break dancing to teach the letter O. And sketch called Desperate Houseplants. They really keep up with the times.

One year older and wiser too.

Well KC has become the ripe old age of 31. It's funny to think that he is into his 3os now. When I ask him how it feels, he just keep aprehensively repeating "It's crazy."Anyone you ask would think he is 25. He may look that way, but he has the wisdom of a man beyond 31 years. He teaches me so many things everyday from Rubik's cube tricks, to technical computer advice, to spiritual eternal principals. I often remember how lucky I am to have found him. He's the most humble, honest, patient, and sincere man I know. I can't wait to celebrate many more birthdays with him.
Happy Birthday Honey. I love you!

This may gross you out

I was merrily wiping a shelf in my fridge when I hit my thumb on the other shelf and this happened.Yes, that is my fingernail split pretty far down. And I had just trimmed my nails to avoid such a catastrophe. What am I supposed to do with that? I don't want to clip it all the way. It actually doesn't hurt so bad but it's pretty annoying to have this on my right thumb. It's amazing how such a small things can alter the day. You never realize all you do with your right hand until it is damaged. I'll have to up my vitamins so that is grows really fast.

Unexpectedly alone

When KC went back to work on Monday, they sprung an opportunity on him to do a presentation at a conference in Atlanta on Thursday. It's always good to get your face and name out there at conferences for future job prospects (it's always the same people at these conferences, so making friends is important), but here I am for a night with0ut him. This normally wouldn't be so bad, but last week I was with him 24 hours a day so that's what I'm used to. He'll be here again by dinner time tomorrow, so I'll just try to keep myself busy and get a lot done until then.

"I Love it when we're Cruisin' Together"

Note: If you have already seen Cami's blog, you may think this is identical with the layout being the same and all, but it's not and I had this idea all along, so there.

It feels like we just left for the cruise, and at the same time feels like we've been gone for weeks. I guess that's what happens when you spend every waking (and when you are supposed to be sleeping) moment doing something eventful. It was a truly luxurious vacation and we were so happy to have been able to spend it with the Turpins. There was so much to do on this trip so I took notes each day and will list them here with the pictures for that day. I didn't write in the journal at all about this so this is my record. Sorry if it's boring for you. But it might give you some ideas for future vacations. It is perfect for kids and Disney Lovers, but if you are not a fan or Disney and you don't kids there are things that you can do where you would've even know it was a Disney Cruise, but just a nice relaxing vacation. I'll never cruise with anyone else again. Read on if you need convincing.

DAY 1:
  • Had a pretty good flight and got our bags quicker than ever before.
  • We were greeted at almost every door throughout the entire cruise by a crew member handing out hand wipes to clean our hands. I LOVED this being the slight germaphobe that I am. They are all over the boat.
  • We started with an enormous and beautiful buffet.
  • We toured the ship, went to the safety talk, and then did some swimming.
  • We had the late dinner so we justified a "snack" of pizza, fries, wraps, and fruit, collectively.
  • We left the kids in the free kiddie place where they were always sad to leave when we came to get them.
  • Dinner was in Triton's this night. Throughout dinner the colors change to look like your under the sea. I wasn't afraid to order two entrees for dinner every night. It was duckling and sirloin steak this night. Each meal was four courses. The appetizers were things like goat cheese and zucchini quiche. We ate very well.
  • We saw an amazing Hercules show. I was seriously awed at the talent and energy they put into these shows.
  • KC and I managed to stay up for a 10:45 pm showing of Dan in Real Life. I've really been wanting to see this show and was delighted to see that they were showing it in the Buena Vista Theater. I had to drink some Diet Coke for that night.

DAY 2:
  • Cami and I worked out at 7:00 both the mornings. We started in the fitness center for 3o minutes to watch the sun rise, then we went to the luxurious spa to shower and let our feet get massaged on a chaise lounge in the bath robes provided. Probably my highlight on the boat.
  • We ate a huge buffet breakfast and then left the ship to visit Nassau in the Bahamas. We did light shopping and took a taxi to a beautiful private beach that would've cost $15/person if the lady made us pay.
  • I didn't need chapstick or lotion from the humidity in the air. I'm usually addicted to these things.
  • We dropped off the kids again and watched National Treasure two, where Jake made a run to get everyone ice cream and chocolate chip cookies from the deck.
  • We were waiting to the Golden Mickey show to start when we spotted Jeffy and Jake on the big screen being interviews on the "red carpet" before the show. He was so cute.
  • When we were getting ready for dinner, my pants were significantly tighter.
  • We played a little Wheel or Fortune in the lounge. Jake is really good at that game.
  • We ate another huge dinner in Animators Palate. All over the walls the pictures start as black and white and eventually become colorful.
  • We didn't party too much at the huge pirate party on the deck, but they have an AMAZING buffet that I took a million pictures of and was first in line to try the desserts. I was already stuffed, but managed to try a few things.

DAY 3:

  • We did our work out again. I just loved it.
  • My breakfast was a buckwheat crepe with eggs, tofu, and spinach inside. Cool, eh? I also had a mango yogurt and granola parfait. I want it right now.
  • We disembarked and headed for Castaway Cay, the Cruise's private island. It was like you were still on the boat with all the amenities like free food, and free shuttles. We could even drop off the kids at the beach so we could spend some time alone at Serenity Bay, the adults only beach. We floated around pretty much all by ourselves. It was paradise.
  • We ate a pretty amazing barbecue lunch, and picked up the kids to go to the family beach.
  • KC took initiative and rented some snorkel gear. I'm usually a little frightened of this, but I bucked up, and loved it!
  • We just chilled on the hammock and had a wonderful time on the beach.
  • We got back on the ship, walked the decks at sunset, checked out the teen loft which was awesome, and then got ready for dinner.
  • Dinner was at Palo, a reservation and adult only restaurant. We reserved right when we booked the cruise. It was so so so delicious and we again ate a lot of amazing food. It was true luxury.
  • We saw our finale show, Disney Dreams. I loved singing along to all the songs. We are putting all the shows on our Netflix right aways. I'm so in the mood to see them all.
  • We were so tired every night. KC and Jake went to see a football game in one of the lounges, and I fell quickly to sleep.

DAY 4:
  • We woke up, packed, and headed for our finale breakfast. It was sad to go but were glad to be able to go home where we weren't forced to eat constantly and be entertained from sun up to way past sun down. Okay, okay, we would've loved to stay, but it's good to leave wanting more, right. The kids were pretty tired by this point, making everyone a little relieved it was time to go.
  • We had a different flight than the Turpins, so we said our goodbyes, and after a couple hours of waiting to board the flight, and an hour waiting to actually take off (luckily I slept through this) we made it home safe and sound. (Don't worry, this slide show it much shorter.)

This vacation would not have been possible with out Cami and Jake and we couldn't be more grateful that they took us with them. We are the luckiest aunt and uncle in the world!

Now if I can just get used to not eating 5 HUGE ready-made meals a day. I guess I have to go grocery shopping sometime as soon as my food shivers have subsided.

I'm swaying a little

That's what KC has said often since we got off the ship. Yes we are home and had a fantastic, luxurious time. The actual post will take me some time to write and contain a lot (and I mean a lot) of pictures. We had three cameras going around-our small one, our big one, and Cami's. I have yet to organize them, so I just wanted to say that we are back and stay tuned. But I am warning you, you might want to start saving up for a Disney Cruise very soon after you see the pictures. It doesn't get much better that this.

Play Time

While babysitting today I thought we really needed something productive that didn't involve eating. We usually bake, but I have a cruise figure to keep. So thanks to Corrine for posting this play dough recipe, we had a great time making and playing with it. We did leave out the Kool-aid though. I remember my mom making this with us kids all the time. I think we even gave it as birthday gifts to friends. I loved that it was something that we could just make whenever we wanted and we didn't have to go to the store to get it. He was very creative making rocket ships. train tracks and anything else a 5 year old mind usually thinks of. Can you tell this picture of me is from his point of view. He loves taking pictures.

We also spent a while out of doors since it is seriously over 70 degrees outside. It is really gorgeous, but I'm the type that the likes the weather to stay true to the seasons. I like the winter to come hard if it means it will leave sooner. But since I have no choice on the matter, I'll just pull out my flip flops and enjoy it.

Date Night

Well we don't have regular date nights like the title might suggest, but we had a great time on a date tonight. We went ice skating at the National Gallery of Art in the Sculpture Garden. It was the most beautiful night and we hardly needed our jackets. When we got off the Metro it was so quiet and peaceful on the National Mall with a practically warm breeze blowing . Only a few runners passed us but we were pretty much on our own to enjoy the beautiful scenery that was 360 degrees around us. The Washington Monument and the Capital stood out so amazingly all lit up against the night sky. We arrived at the charming skating rink and were happy to see that there were people even more timid than us. Neither of us have skated in years. It almost felt like we were on a cheesy chick flick as we passed the National Archives while we skated. We had so much fun together and had a great time reading old text messages on the metro ride home.

We just took our little half broken camera, otherwise we might have gotten better pictures of the buildings and monuments.

I never thought I would say this...

...but there is one video game type thing I approve of. I have always said that I hate all of them and would never allow them in my house. I have said they are a waste of time, space, and money. While most of that is still true in my opinion, I have really enjoyed playing Wii. I don't think I would've ever tried it if some friends of our's hadn't forced the controllers into my hands assuring me that I would love it. Sure enough, within minutes I was hooked and working up a sweat. And I was sore the next day. In fact, every time I play it, I feel sore in places I haven't been before.

So, turns out I am pretty good at Wii bowling. And I am giving full credit to my score or 224 to this signature stance.
I was playing a game with Jefferson and Cami on the weekend and he was desperately trying to get a better score. He is an observant little boy and kept making poses and asking "do you do this, or this?" It was so funny and I wish I took his picture. But it was pretty accurate to mine. He'll beat me in no time. I'm sure. I am also a fan of doubles tennis, and boxing. Although boxing is pretty intense and tires me out pretty fast. I guess not ALL of the video games are complete wastes of time. Doesn't mean I'll give in to having them in my house. We'll just keep mooching off the Turpins.

Cruise prep

Well Cami and I just returned from a luxurious and relaxing pedicure. I always wonder if it's worth it to go and pay the money to have it done when I could very easily do it in the comfort of my own home and not have to walk around in the winter with flip flops while they dry. But as soon as I sat in that massage chair and my feet and calves were getting a rub down, all doubts went away. We were seriously enjoying ourselves and had a great conversation with the cute Vietnamese ladies doing all the work. I always wonder what they are saying to each other. One main topic that kept coming up was that they all thought I was 17 years old. One girl even guessed I was 15! Sheesh. When I told them I'd been married almost two years that thought that was crazy. I actually get this a lot. I don't mind. I should want to look young I guess.

Well the cruise is sooner than I keep thinking it is. We are sooooooo crazy excited and can't wait to spend a few sunny days with the Turpins. And to fill ourselves with so much food we can't stand it.

A quiet ring in

This year was a very mellow New Years celebration for us. We don't usually party all night, but we at least find some way to be festive. We had a couple parties to hit, and then KC unexpectedly became ill and spent Sunday night throwing up, poor guy. He weakly went to work on Monday, but did not feel like going out for the night. I was actually a little relieved at this since staying up until midnight is not a strong point of mine. So after chicken pot pie and several episodes of Twilight Zone, we turned in Early. He was feeling a little better in the morning so I decided to copy Melody and make crepes for breakfast (see Emily's Experiments) We tried to find a skating rink that was open and decided that we'd try to go on the weekend due to KC's continues weakness and closed rinks. We did manage to go see I Am Ledgend, which was very cool, a little weird, and a lot to think about. We called up the Millers and they were up for games and pizza so we spent a couple hours with them and their very cute and very chubby little one. I made a cake out of the rest of the crepes and we all had a great time eating and playing Hoopla. Happy New Year all! Whether it was quiet or involved lots of noisemakers.

Yay! Twilight Zone Marathon!

This has been something I have looked forward to for years. There's always a marathon on New Years ever/New Years day on the Sci-Fi Channel. I've seen many of the episodes, but for some reason this morning almost all of them are ones I've never seen. They always wig me out a little and that's why I like them. Jake has been known to tivo them in the past, so I hope we does it again. Then again, I can always watch the ones I miss next year.

Reminiscing

On Friday night we were invited to play some games with some friends. We played a rousing few rounds of Pit, which I love. We had a little challenge and played a few silent round due to a sleepy baby, but I thought it made it more fun and less of a headache. Anyhow, we then moved onto Clue. I was excited to play and then realized it had been probably more than 10 years since I played it. I totally reminded me of a Christmas way back when Drew got it from "Santa". We played over and over. I didn't even come close to winning this time, but it made me remember that it is one of my faves. It's amazing all the strategies you don't see as a kids. With adults it's a whole new game. And we had a great talking about and quoting the movie.

And we're back

WARNING: This will be long and contain exuberant amounts of pictures. This it what happens when I go home to Utah. Carry on if you wish.

We made it home after an okay flight, and as hard as it is to leave all the ones I love, it's nice to come to where your life is. All of our many many (too many) gifts made it home intact and it was like Christmas again opening the box and suitcases to find then. KC and I didn't exchange many gifts in Utah (except a rubix cube and a stapler) because we were waiting on our delivery here at home. I now am a proud owner of a Canon Digital Rebel XT 8 MP SLR camera. Maybe later I will use it to not only have a reason to play with it, but to also show some of the fun gifts we received. Our Sony compact has served us well, but in the excitement of Christmas tree decorating, I dropped it and the ldc has given out. Matt, our camera guru, helped us pick out this one and I already love it. He also gave us some nice accessories he had lying around.I'm going to read up on all the manuals to assure KC this was the right decision. I was jumping up and down with excitement when we was opening the box. Merry Christmas to us!

So I want to use my schedule as a way to add details to our fun trip so I don't leave anything out. Picture can be viewed below.

I'll start by saying that the night before we left, we hung out with the Turpins a little to give the boys a little present. I think they liked Their ice cream ball a lot.

Thursday 12/20

-Fly out of BWI 12:10 pm, arrive in Utah 5:50 pm, picked up by Grahams:I wrote about our crazy flight before, but the layover took about 45 minutes to rearrange some luggage before we took off. It was pretty annoying.
-Go to dinner at about 8:30 (because of the delay with our flight and the crazy snow) at Los Hermanos with family
: Lili, Jeff, Melody, Amber, Todd, Mom, Dad, and Mom R all made it. It was so nice of them to still come since it was so late because of our delayed flight and the snow. A huge plate of nachos is a great way to start a fun week. After we went home to hear a wonderful duet performed by the engaged couple (Lili and Jeff if you haven't heard). Boy can they sing. And he has quite a talent on the piano as well I hear. It's was great to get to know him a little. I tried to break him in as quickly as possible. My little sister REALLY likes him.
-Sleep at Melody's:
We were pretty tired at this point.

Friday 12/21
-9:00 appointment for Mom and me to have our spider veins removed. (You may think this is silly, but it's true. I have them and I want them gone.): Yes I did this procedure and am so glad I did. The veins are disappearing before my eyes. Thanks mom! I so very much appreciate it.
-Last minute Christmas shopping, find out whose stockings we have from the Robinsons
: We actually had a few bouts of last minute shopping, but it did get done nevertheless. We hope Casey and Nicole liked their stockings. We even managed to get an electronic dart board with the provided stocking budget.
-Amber and Melody's preschool program. 6:00 pm: This is always so fun. Especially since Allyson was in it this year. Amber and Melody go above and beyond with this preschool and I love watching the kids sing their hearts out.
-Sleep at Melody's: I LOVED waking up to Julia every morning (well I suppose she woke up to me since I was a little jet lagged). She is the happiest, funniest, most adorable baby and I'm sad she's not in my lap right now.

Saturday 12/22
-Annual get-together with Melody, Marianne, and Jill in the morning:
I've only missed this twice in 8(or something) years. I don't know why we started it, but I am so glad we did. It started out as Chinese food for lunch the day before Christmas Eve. This year we did breakfast at Kneaders. The french toast is to die for! I like the change.
-Make cookies with nieces and nephews at Amber's:
I wanted to bond with the little ones and what is a better way than baking. I loved all of their different decorating techniques. We had a blast.
-Emily's family party at Frisby's at 4:00:
This a great way to see everyone at once. People came from high and low to this party and it was a great time. I especially loved seeing The Grandparents. They are such great friends of mine. I miss them so much being so far away. -Go to Robinson's at 6:00: Here we watched a pretty intense BYU game. I slept through most of it, but woke up at the most exciting parts due to outbursts from the fans. It's a great way to watch a game.
-Sleep at Graham's:
Again, very tired.

Sunday 12/23
-Church with Robinsons, 11:00
-Eat with Robinsons: Janice made some very delicious tomato soup and rolls. Perfect for a cold and snowy day. We relaxed a little and chatted with everyone. We got to see Alicia and Dustin, KC's cousin and spouse who are probably in labor right now. If not, it's close.
-Annual Fondue at Graham's: This has been a tradition for as long as I can remember. We were dipping rosemary, and french breads, cauliflower, and broccoli, ham, and little smokies, apples and I'm sure there is something I forgot. It was extremely delicious. And I must not forget the festive nog. We opened our traditional pajamas, which were robes for the girls and blankets for the boys for a change this year. We love them!
-Movie sleepover/ping pong tournament/Monoploy game at Graham's, where we will most definitely watch Pee-wee's Christmas special:
And we did all of those things. The Monopoly wasn't until after I slept but I heard it was a doosy and Elise took it all. I played a couple rounds of ping pong, but mostly watched. We have some great players. We watched Love Actually, Elf, and clips of Pee-wee, and Muppets. We pulled all the matresses off the beds and pilled them into the living room where most of us slept (or at least tried to) through the night. I counted 9 adults and five kids in one house. It was quite a party. We missed the Turpins a lot so we had to watch them dancing on Cami's blog.

Monday 12/24

-Recover from Sleepover: Noboby slept very long or very well, so we were all a little groggy -Visit Grandmother: We met up with the Rejholecs at Grandmother's. It's always such a delight to see her. She was busy in the kitchen and let us taste some some of her treats.
-Big dinner with Robinsons (Rejholecs are coming too!): We had a meal complete with ham, Janice's rolls, mustard green beans, pretzel jello, salad, a funeral potatoes (aka potato nasty at my house) and a nice assortment of cookies for dessert. We played the chimes, sang carols and then with Nicole's dilligence in finding it, we watched Elf. I will never tire of that movie, EVER!
-Sleep at Robinson's

Tuesday 12/25

-CHRISTMAS!!: I woke up pretty early, as you might have read previously. At about 9:30, we ate the delicious breakfast casserole, and cinnamon rolls that Janice makes every year, and them started the gift extravaganza. It had snowed overnight and was so beautiful outside.
-I'm sure we'll do some giving and receiving of presents at some point: The Robinsons are always so generous with their gifts. We are always so gratful for how thoughtful they are. We absolutely love all of our gifts. We then went to the Grahams for more food and gift exchanging. It was so fun to see all the children and their new gadgets. The girls were doused in new pink attire, bags, purses, a even ipods and accessories for the ipods. Times have sure changed. We also received many heart felt gifts here. We are very blessed to have such great families. We ate some traditional pull aparts as well as the usuals (ham, potatoes, etc.) We watched Hairspray and laughed very hard. It was a nice day.
-Make sure to check into SWA to get in the A group:
KC checked us in just in time. -Maybe a movie: We finally watched the Simpsons movie with the Robinsons. That was a long time coming and it was pretty funny.
-Sleep at Robinson's: It was qutie an accomplishment to pack everything we got in only the luggage we brought, but we did it.

Wednesday 12/26

-Leave SLC at 10:10 am, arrive in Maryland 7:00 pm. Bummer. Actually it won't be so bad because we'll have the cruise to look forward to! Hooray!:
I'm always sad to leave everyone, but we we know we will see them again at the weddings in the summer. We love and miss everyone so much. Thanks for making Christmas so special to us. It is always nice to have my love to come home with me. He has been such an amazing husband and it was only 2 years ago on Christmas day that he proposed. I have been the luckiest and happiest girl during those years and I can't wait for more to come. And yes, the Cruise it coming up very soon and we can't even wait!

A side note: I got into a bad habit this year of stating many times that I in fact hate Christmas. As much as I dislike the stress of traveling, shopping, crowds, and lines, I had no reason to say this. That would be saying that I hate the reason for this Holiday that is Christ's birth and his life. These things mean more to me than anything else and I wish I would've thought twice before letting those dumb words exit my mouth. I don't hate the season either, I just have a way of exagerating my feelings. I'm working on it.

I've already done my bargain hunting, and got some great stuff. Now I just need to get this place back to normal. Unpacking is never fun. Happy New Year! ( If you made it to the bottom, you deserve a big prize)

Merry Christmas!

So I am awake hours before our breakfast is to be eaten, and presents are to be opened, just as I suspected. I've actually come to appreciate and count on this time I have in the morning that I wake up before anyone else. When I occasionally "sleep in" I feel behind and rushed, so this is my time to get myself together.

It's been such a wonderful Christmas visit here in Utah. I have enjoyed seeing everyone so much. All our hosts have been so hospitable, and we are so sad to be leavening tomorrow. For my own record, I'll make notes about everything on the schedule later so that I can remember all the fun details. There has been a little stress involved, but that is to be expected and it could've been much worse. Special thanks to Jonny for letting us pratically have his car while we were here. It was a lifesaver. I know it's not over, and the whole reason we are here hasn't even happened yet, but I just wanted to get a few notes down. We really have missed the Turpins and Drew. We did get to talk to both of the yesterday, and KC and I will be sure to show our videos and pictures around when we get home. It's always amazing how much the kids grow when we don't see them. Here are a couple pictures to tide them over. The kiddies and I had a cookie party and they all made the cutest cookies!Julia is so cute and photogenic, she doesn't even need explanation.
Merry Christmas everyone!

Christmas schedule updated once again

Well, a few adjustments have been made, but I am happy to make them. We are trying so hard to see everyone and do so many things. I hope we are able to make it all work. Everyone is being so patient (especially KC) with the craziness going on. Melody and Jonny have been nice to let us use their car to finally finish our Christmas Shopping and I consider that a HUGE accomplishment. We have been having the most wonderful time bonding with Julia and the Rejholecs and taking countless pictures, and we can't wait to see everyone else. This schedule can always be moved around, but I have to have it just to remember what is going on. Thanks for everyone's patience.

I am making this schedule to keep myself on track for the very few days we will be in Utah. There is always so much to do and it's hard to keep track of all of it, so this will be updated every time something is added/changed.

As you can see there is much to be added and conversations with the in-laws to be had before this is completed as this is mostly only the plans for my side, but it will just keep appearing until it is complete, and then it will be a great journal of all the happenings. If anyone on this schedule has a question or complaint, know that this is just an outline and a few things can be altered. I will be happy to make any necessary changes if possible. And I will desperately try to fit Cafe Rio and Purple Turtle in there somewhere.

We'll miss you TURPINS!

Almost home

Well, we are here at the Denver International Airport awaiting our flight in about an hour and a half. Luckily that have this free WiFi for everyone to use and it's been quite a nice way to use up the time. Actually, before I left home, I kept Matty's 100 things page open so when we were on the flight I could read it with out connecting. It has kept me with something to read while this slow connection tries to find everything I ask it to. Thanks Matt. Anyway, it was a semi-uneventful flight which is good. Quite a lot of turbulence and I was seriously afraid someone around me would puke. But no one did to my knowledge. Our shuttle driver from the parking lot was a character. In five minutes we learned how many years he has been married, how old he was when we got married (he was 19 and his wife was 16), how old he is now, how many kids/grandkids/great-grand kids he has and how he spends his time with them. One of his sons is a recovering alcoholic, so he drinks with his 28 year old grand son. More than you wanted to know? Me too. Anyway, he seemed to be filled with holiday cheer so it was alright. We almost volunteered to switch flight for a 100 dollar each voucher to put toward our next flight and get refunded for this flight, but a mean man stepped right in front of me and pushed his weight around taking one of the last two spaces they needed vacated. Anyway, we are almost home so all if fine and good. I had to take a few deep breaths and stop saying that I hoped that guy missed his flight, but now I'm fine. I stopped for a moment today in the midst of the long cramped and stuffy flight to realize hoe amazing it really is that this machine can carry hundreds of people every day across the country (to see our great families) in a matter of hours. It's easy to get caught up in the annoyances of it all, but I really am so grateful for the amazing resources me have.

I'm very hungry and looking forward to our big mexican feast with everyone that can make it (see schedule). We can't wait to see you everyone!. Here is a picture of us awaiting our flight. Don't we look excited. . . (We really are, even in the picture doesn't show it. We just want to get this flying over with.)

Thanks

Well, I suppose this is a fix to my annoying blog annoyances. But, thanks to Hannah, my picture is nicely color corrected. She voluntarily made a few different versions of the picture (this one has darkened edges). I might switch them up. Thanks Hannah!

I thought it was obvious

In our Christmas card we put this picture of us in the live nativity at the Washington DC temple when we participated last year. Apparently no one really knows it is us. So if you got a card, just know that that is not just any picture of Mary, Joseph, but it is in fact US playing them. Costco.com only let us print a certain number of characters, and I was too lazy to write individual notes. So now you know. Please pass the word along. Here is a link to the rest of the KCmatronics, as Matt calls them.

Grrrrrrrr!

For some reason Blogger has decided to do some weird thing and shrink my header photo. KC and I have been tweaking the html code left and right, and we are thinking it might take a while to figure this thing out. How obnoxious! KC likes it. He thinks it's mysterious. But I think you are missing out on very important elements of the picture, like the little boats perfectly placed in the picture, and our feet in the sand. One of these days we'll work it out. I guess at this busy time it's hard to dedicate hours to such a silly task. Until then, here is the ever-lovin photo.

Carrollton Ward Christmas Party

We had a splendid time at our ward Christmas party last night. We just got a new activities committee and they put together a great last minute gathering that I think everyone was happy to have attended. I got to the church at about 2 pm to help my friend with all the food. Janine is an awesome chef. She actually works in the food industry so she always knows what to do. She makes the best, non-typically Mormon food at all the parties so I was happy to help. She had several people make turkeys and we threw together some potatoes, stuffing, green beans, and all the rest. We had a huge dessert buffet that various people contributed to and everyone had plenty of food. I had to lead the music to the congregation, and the primary. Since we just had our program last week, we haven't had much time to practice any song for Christmas, but they did their best and that is good enough for me. There were presentations of different countries and how they celebrate Christmas time. And then we had a live nativity in Which KC and Andrew were Shepherds, and our friends the Murphys made a very cute Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, and angel. Now it really feels like it's coming down to the wire with this whole Christmas thing and I hope I'm ready. I'm trying to not turn into a scrooge, but sometime I understand why the character exists. The stress can really get to you.

If you'll note, I added Cafe Rio, Purple Turtle, and Pee-wee's Christmas Special to my schedule. There has to be time to fit in those necessities somewhere.

Almost done

So I gave my notice for my photography job a while ago. I work at two different hospitals and today was my last day at one of them. It's a pretty easy job that requires very few hours. I have enjoyed it very much, learned a little Spanish due to the location of the hospital and have learned a little about photography. It's just time to be done and move one. It's been about a year and a half and such a great opportunity for me. It's weird to think it's been that long. I'll miss a lot about it. The convenience, the flexible hours, the commute (remember how I walk to my main hospital) and seeing the happy (most of the time) families everyday. I have some other plans for the start of the new year so this is it for pictures. Only two more days next week and I'm finished.

Another funny note, I for the first time, played Wii at the Drapers and have been sore ever since. I guess it's pretty good exersize and I actually had a good time playing it. I suppose not all video games are terrible wastes of time.

One more thing. WE WILL BE IN UTAH IN 6 DAYS! Just thought I'd add that.

Bright lights, big city

Who can name the movie? So we ventured to see the annual DC temple lights last weekend. We were with two other couples. One was married, and the other was on a blind date. The married girl set the single girl up with one of her friends and it actually seemed to go very well. We had Mexican food for dinner which is always fine by me, and then headed to the temple. They have concerts of some kind every night during the holiday season. This night it was an adult choir from Alexandria, VA. They were all so cheery-faced with their black turtle necks under their festive sweaters. The music was...okay...but the best part was picking out your favorite people to watch and let them entertain you the whole time. They used their (very decorated) music folders as props for actions in songs to add a dancing feature, and would add jovial chatter between songs to give a relaxed feel. You could just see the inside jokes oozing out of them any time the director would say something funny. They even informed us that they are going to be performing again next week in their pajamas if we want to come. AND they they are hold auditions soon. Now, they were on pitch for the most part, but it didn't seem like you'd stand in line to audition. They did all seem happy and filled with holiday cheer, so it was fun and made for great conversation.

Well the lights were of course amazing. I don't particularly love the bright fluorescent purple, but the LED lights look pretty cool. We looked at a display of Nativity sets from all over the worlds and this one from India caught seemed to stand out a little. Compare the size of the baby Jesus to the rest of the pieces. I guess the maker was a little obvious about where they want your focal point to be. It's kind of freaky. We were laughing pretty hard. Now, we'll see if this night turns this blind date into something more.

I think I have a problem

Last night I needed a sweet fix. I needed one bad. It wasn't just any sweet fix. This is the problem I was talking about. It had to be a specific texture, temperature, and mouth feel to satisfy the need I had for something sweet. It is very unusal that we don't have something to quickly grab after dinner but right now it's really true. It was really cold last night and I had no desire to leave the house so I whipped something up. I call this Wassail Cake. Now, I am not a huge fan of cake mixes, but even I know the value of convenience in times of need so I decided to use one in this circumstance. It was late, and I didn't feel like rummaging in the cupboards for all the ingredients. So, KC has a book called The Cake Mix Doctor. A lot of you may have heard of it. The Festive Cran-Orange Cake sounded like what I wanted and I had all the ingredients. But I mostly used it as a guideline. Here is the original recipe, and my changes in parenthesis:

Cake:
1 yellow cake mix with pudding (I used white)
1 cup fresh orange juice (when my only orange didn't yield enough juice, and I didn't feel like defrosting a concentrate, I decided to use the cold wassail in my fridge)
1/2 c vegetable oil
1/4 c granulated sugar (I cut back on this a little since I knew the wassail was so sweet)
4 eggs (I only had three left and it was fine)
1 cup chopped dried cranberries (I only had fresh so I made a compote my cooking them with sugar a little water, and cinnamon until they were juicy, and sweet, and thick)

Glaze:
1 cup confectioners sugar
3 tablespoons OJ ( I used wassail again)
orange zest for garnish ( I put this into the cake itself, and used sliced almonds for the garnish)

Some quick instructions:
Turn oven to 350. Spray and flour a bundt pan. Mix the cake mix, oil, eggs, wassail, and sugar for a couple minutes in the mixer just like your friendly cake mix suggests. Pour half the mix in the pan, drop spoonfulls of the cranberry compote on the batter and slightly swirl to make sure all batter is covered. Pour the rest of the mix on top and bake for 40 minutes. When it's done, wait a couple minutes and then tap out of the pan onto a cooling rack. I needed mine asap so I didn't wait too long for it to cool. Glaze the cake and them top with almonds and a nice dusting of the good old powdered sugar. This should be done when it's fully cooled, but again, I couldn't wait. If you like wassail, you will love this. I know I did. In fact, I think I'll have some for breakfast right now.

I know I have a whole blog dedicated to food, but this was a special occasion.

For crying out loud

First thing I heard when I turned on the news this morning was of the schools that are either closing early, or are completely closed today. Now, the only thing that is making this happen in the threat of snow. There might be some dust in the air, right now, but that's all. And, they are only expecting 1-2 inched accumulation all day. This would never happen in Utah. But maybe it's for the best since when I was watching the traffic report, many major roads are backed up with crashes from the light dusting. Come on, people! I'm excited for a little wintery snow to fall on us, but I'm not looking forward to the people that freak out and get in accidents in the freeway. I know all kids must be excited. I think I had one snow day growing up, and it was 2 feet or something like that.

When I reached in my purse...

...for a pair of sunglasses for my walk to work, I found all of these:Now, I only purchased one of these. The others were gifts, or found in our car when we bought it (and whiped with alcohol before being worn). I try to keep one in each car, and one in my church bag, and purse, but I always walk inside forgetting they are still on my face. So if you are ever with you you can count on me having some for you to borrow.

Sad day

Well, I don't want to sound too dramatic about something so trivial, but I was very sad when this happened. On Wednesday night I was relaxing on my bed when I heard the terrible sound of one of my prized dessert stands sliding off the shelf onto the slate tiled floor. I was yelling "NO!" as it almost seemed like slow motion when we both just watched it fall and crash into a million little pieces. I had placed a heavy platter behind it against the wall, and it slid down pushing the stand with it. I have several stands, but this was has sentimental value. When I worked at Just Cakes, I would eye this one everyday. The ladies I work with really wanted to get it for me for my wedding so they told me not to buy it. So they did give it to me and I've displayed it in my home ever since admiring it every time I see it. I have broken 3 important things in the last few weeks and this was just the last straw. I didn't even look the whole time KC was cleaning. There were tears involved. I felt bad to keep talking about it to my very understanding husband so I called my mom, and my dad answered so he got to hear all about it. Poor dad. He was very sympathetic too. What a guy. It is silly to get to upset, so I wrote this to move on. Here are the remains. The cute little top knob even broke into pieces. Sigh...

A sweet song

I'm probably behind and everyone has been hearing this song for quite a while, but I only recently heard it and I really like it. I mostly listen to the news, my cds or am on the phone in my car. I rarely listen to the hip stations because I just don't love the music that is playing on them anymore (with the exception of Chritsmas music now. I do listen to that). But Every now and then there is something that catches my ear. I have never heard of this girl before, but I like how the lyrics makes me feel. It's probably a song my friends and I would've LOVED in high school since it describes puppy love so perfectly. It's so sweet and innocent. What girl doesn't love to be kissed on the nose. I Hope you love it too. I'd be interested to hear the rest of her songs. I like her style.
